Hello! I'm Maryam Muhammad. I am Board Chair for Mateenah's Community Services, Inc., an Arizona 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. We have begun organizing a team of parents and community leaders to start a public charter school called Vanguard Academy.  This proposed public charter school will be located in Laveen and will serve students in Laveen, Tolleson, and Avondale. The school will serve students in grades K-5. The school is planned to open in August 2024. We plan to initially serve up to 360 students with small size classrooms of 15 students to enhance program quality. The school will place a special emphasis on building students' foundation in reading, math, and science. Special features of the school will include language immersion in Arabic, French, and Spanish. The school will feature project-based learning in agricultural science and computer technology. We are also exploring the use of single-gender classrooms to address issues of student achievement gaps that emerged during the planning team's initial research and needs assessment. We envision Vanguard Academy as a community collaboration. We invite your input and participation. Please sign-up to volunteer and take the time to complete our survey.
